Disciplining Children Children need discipline within reason. Not abuse to know they are bad. The word discipline, which comes from the root word disciplinare-to teach or instruct- refers to the system of teaching and nurturing that prepares children to achieve competence, self-control, self-direction, and caring for others. An effective discipline system must contain three vital elements; a learning environment characterized by positive, supportive parent-child relationships, a strategy for decreasing or eliminating undesired or ineffective behaviors. Each of these components needs to be functioning adequately for discipline to result in improved child behavior. The earliest discipline strategy is passive and occurs as infants and their caregivers gradually develop a mutually satisfactory schedule of feeding, sleeping, and awaking. Biologic rhythms tend to become more regular and adapt to family routines. The main parental discipline for infants is to provide generally structured daily routines but also to learn to recognize and respond flexibly to the infantââ¬â¢s needs. As infants become more mobile and initiate more contact, parents must impose limitations and structure to create safe spaces for them to explore and play. (Reid JB. Prevention of conduct disorder before and after school entry: relating interventions to developmental findings. Such proactive behaviors are central to discipline for toddlers. Communicating verbally, NO, helps prepare the infant for later use of reasoning. Second-Person Point of View Literary Definition
Second-Person Point of View Literary Definition The second-person point of view uses the imperative mood and the pronouns you, your, and yours to address readers or listeners directly. Though the second-person point of view only rarely serves as a narrative voice in fiction, it does appear in letters, speeches, and other forms of nonfiction, including many types of business writing and technical writing. Examples of Second-Person Point of View You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. Youââ¬â¢re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy whoââ¬â¢ll decide where to go. (Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places Youââ¬â¢ll Go! Random House, 1990)When you yourself put words on paper, remember that the most damning revelation you can make about yourself is that you do not know what is interesting and what is not. Donââ¬â¢t you yourself like or dislike writers mainly for what they choose to show you or make you think about? Did you ever admire an empty-headed writer for his or her mastery of the language? No. So your own winning literary style must begin with interesting ideas in your head. Find a subject you care about and which you in your heart feel others should care about. (Kurt Vonnegut, How to Write With Style, 1982)Consider what you could do with a chip in your ââ¬â¹head that linked directly to the Internet: Within milliseconds, you could retrieve just about any piece of information. And with the collective knowledge of the Web at your disposal, you could quickly fill in your brainââ¬â¢s normal memory gaps- no one would ever guess you slept through that economics seminar. (Maria Konnikova, Brain Hacking. The Atlantic, June 2015)à You, as an online consumer, are on your own. You cannot trust the Webââ¬â¢s gatekeepers to protect you from suspicious operators, nor can you rely on an undermanned Federal Trade Commission to keep the Internetââ¬â¢s millions of businesses in line. At least for now, every time you give your credit-card number to an unfamiliar online company, you will have to make a leap of faith. (Taylor Clark, The Dark Lord of the Internet. The Atlantic, January/February 2014)You are a sculptor. You climb a great ladder; you pour grease all over a growing longleaf pine. Next, you build a hollow cylinder like a cofferdam around the entire pine, and grease its inside walls. You climb your ladder and spend the next week pouring wet plaster into the cofferdam, over and inside the pine. You wait; the plaster hardens. Now open the walls of the dam, split the plaster, saw down the tree, remove it, discard, and your intricate sculpture is ready: this is the shape of part of the air. (Annie Dillard, Pi lgrim at Tinker Creek. Harper, 1974) The Conversational You The second-person pronoun (you) lets the author hook the reader as if in conversation. Call it cozy. Call it confiding. You is a favorite of the Plain English folks, who view it as an antidote to the stiff impersonality of legalese and urge bureaucrats to write as if speaking to the public. (Constance Hale, Sin and Syntax: How to Craft Wickedly Effective Prose. Random House, 2001) Overworking You Careful not to let the you character sound like an outtake from a Humphrey Bogart movie. The second person tone can easily slip into hard-boiled detective mode: You approach the door. You knock. You turn the knob. You hold your breath. Vary your sentence constructions to avoid this pitfall. (Monica Wood, Description. Writers Digest, 1995) Second-Person Point of View in Ads Here are some [ads] from the . . . New York Times: (1) Youll never read a book with greater interest. Earn 5% on your savings with our Golden Passbook Account.(2) Amsterdam is a whole lot more than charming canals and historic houses. There, by the beautiful zee, you can watch diamonds being cut, and do some cutting up of your own in some of Europes sassiest cabarets.(3) Break out the frosty bottle, boys, and keep your collins dry!(4) Do you know which collar style suits you best? For example, do you need a lower collar? a higher collar? a quarter size collar? Perhaps you want a tapered waistline, or even, an in-between sleeve length. Throughout all advertising, whether jocular or not, there is an effort to buttonhole the reader by uses of language that promote a close relation with the speaker. The most obvious device in this direction is simple enough: the second-person pronoun. Note in all our examples the repetition of you, your, as well as the direct appeal of the imperative voice (break out, keep). In example 4 above, the stress on your particular needs may be intended as especially flattering. In addition, observe those familiar devices of language that once again create the persona as an easy-going talker-fellow rather than as a writer-fellow. Contractions: youll never read. Colloquialisms: cutting up, sassiest. The list of short fragmented questions familiar in speech: a higher collar? a quarter size collar? The Real Person of 21st-century Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
The Real Person of 21st-century - Essay Example The present study focuses on an understanding of the real person of the 21st century focusing on their inner and outer selves and how the actions of the outer self get justified by the inner self and how with age, the inner self gets surrendered to the outer self. Existence of Human Beings as Two Selves: The Inner Self and the Outer Self: As Woofenden mentioned in his studies, ââ¬Å"Everyone has an inner and an outer part, but these are different in a good person than in a harmful personâ⬠(Woofenden). The difference between the good and the harmful persons lie in the fact that in case of a good person, the inner part is found to exist in the heaven along with parts of light, and the outer part exists in the world along with the light. On the other hand, in case of a harmful person, both the inner and the outer selves exist in the world with the light and there is no existence of his self in the heaven. It can also be said that in harmful people, the inner self does not exist a t all (Woofenden). By inner self of a human being is meant the ââ¬Å"subtle core present within every being without which the existence of the body itself gets negated. The body is there for our Inner self is there. The Inner self can live without the body but the body cannot sustain on its ownâ⬠(Kumar). When a person is born, even in the 21st century, the inner self is also born along with the person. If the inner self had not been present, the body of the human being would not have lived. The presence of the inner self can be realized with the implementation of ââ¬Å"only the power of discrimination and logistics that makes a man arrive at the right conclusionsâ⬠(Kumar). There are several researchers who have conducted their studies on the existence of the two selves of human beings. Considering the persons of the 21st century, views from researchers reflect that the subconscious mind of the people represents their inner selves. While on the other hand, the outer sel f is represented by the conscious mind of the human being. The outer self is vulnerable and subjected to different external influences including education, persuasion, intimidation, pressure from the peers and close ones, propaganda, as well as illusions and delusions prevalent in the surroundings. For the outer self of a human being, it is essential to understand the evolution of mankind, and hence accept the intellectuality depending on which they need to carry themselves and their behavior in the society. When there is a separation between the inner and outer self of a human being, it is referred to as neurosis. Neurosis generally represents emotional or psychological disturbances within the human being (Hughes 57). With the outer self of the human being present and living in the world, there is a constant development of self awareness that happens within a human being, particularly in the conscious mind of the human being. The outer self constantly develops the nature and behavi or of the persons for their thoughts and feelings enabling them to make the correct decisions for their living in the society. On the other hand, most of the time, human beings are not aware of their inner selves as they are unconscious about it. However for the 21st century real person, it is essential that the evolution of the mankind and the direction of the

The Go-Getter :: essays research papers
The Go-Getter is a story about one manââ¬â¢s drive and persistence. William E. Peck is his name and he is an ex-soldier who was injured in battle. Bill lost one of his arms and had one of his legs shortened because of a gunshot wound. But the story begins as the Ricks & Logging Company is looking for a man who can take over managerial responsibilities in their Shanghai office. The two previous managers have had alcohol problems and have not lived up to their responsibilities. So the company is looking for a replacement. First off, Cappy Ricks and Mr. Skinner are set on a Mr. Andrews taking the job in Shanghai. But in walks this gimpy one-armed man into Mr. Ricksââ¬â¢ office and wowââ¬â¢s him with his powerful ability to sell himself, Bill Peck. Bill had met with several other people in the company and they did not give him a chance. But he wouldnââ¬â¢t quit and went straight to the top and achieved what he was looking for, and got his chance. Early in Billââ¬â¢s job, he does surprisingly well. The top dogs at the company think that Bill just may be the man to take over the Shanghai office instead of Mr. Andrews. But he would have to pass one test. Cappy sends Bill out to pick up a blue vase and deliver it back to Cappy by a certain time and place. What Bill doesnââ¬â¢t know is that Cappy sets obstacles to make the task almost impossible. Bill succeeds in this mission to the surprise of Cappy. Bill is only the second person out of fifteen to actually complete the mission. Bill is ultimately offered the job to take over the Shanghai office. At my internship, my supervisor in working the cameras at WICU has not exemplified the same managerial style and qualities as Cappy Ricks. Heââ¬â¢s just not that mean, in the sense of sending me out on a bogus story or on a wild goose chase. But he does have confidence in me to shoot what I think is appropriate. His confidence in me does work, because if he would always shoot a story or scene, then how could I learn. Iââ¬â¢m not really sure if Iââ¬â¢m beneficial to the station because I am only an intern. But there is a little over a month left, so maybe in time Iââ¬â¢ll be beneficial to the station.

A Look At Muslim Empires
The Muslim community is known to have been under the influence of three major empires: the Ottoman Empire, The Safavids and the Grandeur of the Mughals. Let us take a close look at these three empires and try to identify in which areas are they the same and how they specifically support the Muslimââ¬â¢s view of the world. First of is the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire also known in the West as the Turkish Empire, existed from 1299 to 1923. Osman I is regarded as the founder of the Ottoman Empire. He gave the name ââ¬Å"Ottomanâ⬠to the Ottoman State and declared its independence, becoming the first Bey. He extended the frontiers of Ottoman settlement towards the Byzantine Empire, while other Turkish beyliks suffered from internal fighting. Under Osman I, the Ottoman capital moved to Bursa. It was in this period that a formal Ottoman government was created; its institutions would remain for nearly four centuries before being reformed. In contrast to many contemporary states, the Ottoman bureaucracy tried to avoid military rule, (see: millet). Although the Empire was primarily a military state, its civics and economy did not reflect a policy of aggression. The expansionist policies of the Ottoman Empire were not undertaken with the aim of destruction, but with the goal of Ottoman settlement in the area. The strategic conquest of Constantinople became a crucial objective for Ottoman rule to extend over the Eastern Mediterranean and Balkans. In 1389, the Ottoman victory at the Battle of Kosovo effectively marked the end of Serbian power in the region, and paved the way for Ottoman expansion into Europe. The Mughal Empire, on the other hand, was an empire that at its greatest territorial extent ruled most of the Indian subcontinent, then known as Hindustan, and parts of what is now Afghanistan and the Balochistan region. It was established in 1526, enjoyed expansion and consolidation until about 1707 and survived, even if in drastically attenuated form, until 1857. The empire was founded by the Timurid leader Babur in 1526, when he defeated Ibrahim Lodi, the last of the Delhi Sultans at the First Battle of Panipat. Mughal is the Persian word for Mongol. The Mughal rulers were adherents of Islam. The Mughal ruling class was Muslims, although most of the subjects of the Empire were Hindu. Although Babur founded the Empire, the dynasty remained unstable (and was even exiled) until the reign of Akbar, who was not only of liberal disposition but also intimately acquainted, since birth, with the mores and traditions of India. Under Akbar's rule, the court abolished the jizya (the poll-tax on non-Muslims) and abandoned use of the lunar Muslim calendar in favor of a solar calendar more useful for agriculture. One of Akbar's most unusual ideas regarding religion was Din-i-Ilahi (ââ¬Å"Faith-of-Godâ⬠in English), which was an eclectic mix of Hinduism, versions of Sufi Islam, Zoroastrianism and Christianity. It was proclaimed the state religion until his death. These actions however met with stiff opposition from the Muslim clergy. The Safavids were a native Iranian dynasty from Iranian Azarbaijan that ruled from 1501 to 1736, and which established Shi'a Islam as Iran's official religion and united its provinces under a single Iranian sovereignty, thereby reigniting the Persian identity and acting as a bridge to modern Iran. Even though Safavids were not the first Shia rulers in Iran they were played most crucial role in making the Shia official religion in the whole of Iran. There were large Shia communities in some cities like Qom and Sabzevar as early as 8th century. In the 10th and 11th centuries the Buwayhids who were of Zeydi a branch of Shi'ism ruled in Fars, Isfahan and Baghdad. As a result of Mongol conquest, and relative religious tolerance of Ilhanids, Shia dynasties were re-established in Iran ââ¬â Sarbedaran in Khorasan being the most important. ShahOljeitu ââ¬â the sultan of Ilkhanate converted to Twelver Shiism in 13th century, however the population of Iran stayed largely Sunni until Safavid period. These three empires dominated the Middle East during early 16th to 17th century and all of them played a crucial role in establishing the religion for each of their occupied areas. The leaders of these empires are said to have been chosen by Divine intervention and claimed to have been sent by God or Allah to rule over the land. In addition, the growth of these three empires was interrupted with wars from one another or other empires in the region. In terms of influence on the rest of the world, the main mughal contribution to the south Asia was their unique architecture. Many monuments were built during the mughal era including the Taj Mahal. Meantime, examples of Ottoman architecture of the classical period, aside from Istanbul and Edirne, can also be seen in Egypt, Eritrea, Tunisia, A On the other hand, handicrafts such as tilemaking, pottery and textiles developed during the Safavid dynasty and great advances were made in miniature painting, bookbinding, decoration and calligraphy ââ¬â which still can be seen in Modern European art circles. As for promoting Muslim views, it must be said that the Ottoman Empire was, in a broad sense, tolerant towards its non-Muslim subjects; it did not, for instance, forcibly convert all of them to Islam. The sultans took their primary duty to be service to the interests of the state, which could not survive without taxes and a strong administrative system. The state's relationship with the Greek Orthodox Church, for example, was largely peaceful, and the church's structure was kept intact and largely left alone but under close control and scrutiny until the Greek War of Independence of 1821ââ¬â1831 and, later in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the rise of the Ottoman constitutional monarchy, which was driven to some extent by nationalistic currents. Other churches, like the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, were dissolved and placed under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Church. On the other hand, the empire often served as a refuge for the persecuted and exiled Jews of Europe; for example, following the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, Sultan Beyazid II welcomed them into Ottoman lands. Shia is the ruling religion during the Safavid dynasty and there was no written record of their support to the Muslim community. On the other hand, the Mughal ruling class were Muslims, although most of the subjects of the Empire were Hindu. Critical Thinking Is Different From Just Thinking - 943 Words
Critical thinking is different from just thinking. It is deeper thought process that involves thinking about your thinking.(PearsonHighered) It is likely that I already have views on what is okay and not okay: what it is, what its influence is to people. I have these views even if I havenââ¬â¢t formulated them specifically for myself. Each view is an example of thinking, but not necessarily an example of critical thinking. Critical thinking starts once I reflect on my thinking: Why do I have these views about right and wrong? Where is the evidence surrounding my thoughts? How do other people see my views differently? What are their views based on? Critical thinking involves standards, a reasonable judgement call based off of ideas and the criteria to meet those ideas. Taking a step back to think about the relevant and irrelevant to make a decision that would benefit the situation. Critical thinking often comes about a real life situation, when the choice that you make is going to affect not just yourself but the people or places around you. Thinking through choices and making things that are unclear become clear is part of the process, there may not be a single right answer but there are some wrong answers and some that may even be destructive.
